The potential privacy and security risks associated with LOVOT's feature of randomly capturing highlights.

Case Number: 0101

Date: 2023.11.07

Author: Amelia HAN

Background: As innovative commercial products in Japan, LOVOTs are not limited to usage in semi-public spaces, such as care centers, shopping malls, and laboratories. They are also increasingly popular for use in private settings as companions within people's homes. This raises a significant concern regarding privacy and data protection, as LOVOTs engage in close and long-term interactions with household members. There is a high likelihood that a wide range of personal data will be collected by LOVOTs while providing services related to entertainment, healthcare, and security monitoring within private residences.

Description of Ethical Issues: In the course of user interactions, LOVOT spontaneously captures photos of memorable moments. The robot autonomously selects the timing for these shots, which is not under user control. During photo capture, the robot's eyes display a "heart" pattern to notify the user that the moment is being documented. Users can access these recorded photos through a remote app, enabling them to decide whether to keep or delete them. This feature enables LOVOT to help users document significant moments in their lives. However, the absence of prior consent for these captures raises concerns regarding the need for authorization.

Scenario Description: Takahashi family recently welcomed their newborn baby. One day, while they were out shopping, they came across a LOVOT robot display. These robots not only provide interaction and companionship for children as they grow but also offer a recording function. Intrigued by the features, they decided to purchase a LOVOT for their home. After using it for a week, they discovered that the LOVOT randomly captures moments in their lives in the form of photos. They can view these photos remotely on their phones. The photos include joyful family interactions, ordinary daily scenes, and even private moments.

Importance of Ethical Issues: Due to the feature of LOVOT capturing photos randomly without prior consent, users may have legitimate concerns about their privacy and security.

Ethical Principles and Values: Privacy and safety. Explain how these principles and values relate to the ethical issues.

Discussion of Possible Solutions: Regarding this issue, are there other possibilities for optimization, such as adding an option for obtaining consent before capturing photos?
